What Is a Web-Based PACS, and Why Does It Matter?
A quick look at what sets a web-based PACS apart from a traditional installed system, and why it matters for day-to-day radiology work.
A Picture Archiving and Communication System, or PACS, is the software that stores, retrieves and displays medical images such as X-rays, CT and MRI scans. Traditionally, PACS software has been installed on dedicated workstations, which means updates, maintenance and access are tied to specific machines.
A web-based PACS moves that access into the browser. Studies are stored centrally, and any authorized user can open the worklist and view a study from a standard browser — on a PC, tablet or, where supported, a mobile device.
Why this matters day to day
- No client software to install or maintain on every workstation
- Radiologists and referring doctors can review studies without being tied to one machine
- Updates happen centrally, not on every device
A good web-based PACS still needs to render DICOM images without unnecessary compression, so that image quality remains suitable for reporting — accessibility should not come at the cost of diagnostic detail.
