The idea for BharatPACS took shape during the COVID period, when diagnostic centres and hospitals across India had to scale their imaging and reporting workflows quickly — and ran straight into the limitations of the PACS systems they were using.

Many of those systems worked, but only within tight limits. A small workflow change — adding a user, adjusting a worklist column, changing how a case moved from one stage to the next — meant contacting the PACS provider and waiting. Fixed subscription structures left little room to adapt. The organizations running the PACS were, in practice, dependent on the company that sold it to them for almost every operational decision.

That gap — between what a diagnostic centre or hospital actually needed day to day, and what they were able to control themselves — is what BharatPACS was built to close. Instead of a system where every change routes back through the vendor, BharatPACS was designed around a single Admin ID that gives the organization itself the ability to manage users, assign cases, configure worklists and run its own workflow — directly.

Talk to enough diagnostic centres and hospitals about their PACS, and the same frustrations come up again and again:

• Dependency on the PACS provider for small, everyday changes

BharatPACS was designed around a simple principle: the organization using the PACS should control the PACS.

At the centre of BharatPACS is a single Admin ID that can create and manage every user type your organization needs — Co-Admin, Radiologist, Diagnostic Centre, Assignor, Verifier, Physician, Dashboard Viewer, Receptionist, Billing, Typist, Lab Staff, Group ID, and other roles as required.

That means routine administration — the kind of thing that used to mean picking up the phone to the PACS provider — happens inside your own organization, through your own Admin ID.

The BharatPACS worklist tracks a case through distinct stages — All, Created, History, Unassigned, Assigned, Pending, Draft, Verify, Final, Reverted, Urgent and Reprint — so anyone looking at the dashboard can see exactly where a case stands.

Cases can also be tagged Emergency, Priority, STAT or MLC, and these tags can influence how a case is surfaced on the dashboard — so time-sensitive cases don't get lost in a general queue.

When a second opinion or additional review is needed, a case can be assigned to multiple radiologists rather than being limited to one. And if a centre or verifier isn't satisfied with a report, the case can be reverted back to the radiologist with a reason attached — the revert and its reason stay visible in the case's history, and the identity behind the final report remains traceable throughout.

A lot of the back-and-forth between a diagnostic centre and a radiology team happens outside whatever system they're using — a phone call to ask about a case, a message to clarify a detail, a follow-up nobody wrote down.

Each case in BharatPACS can carry its own message, note and history, so that conversation happens against the case itself instead of disappearing into a call log. It's visible to the users involved in that case's workflow, which means less time spent repeating context on the phone, and a record that everyone involved can refer back to.

That means contributing to India's technology and healthcare economy, and reducing unnecessary dependency on platforms built elsewhere for different systems and different assumptions about how a diagnostic centre or hospital actually works.

The broader goal is straightforward: give Indian healthcare organizations advanced technology they can genuinely control — and, over time, grow BharatPACS into a wider part of India's radiology and medical imaging ecosystem.
